Marijuana: Colorado pot products seized in Oklahoma could put two men in prison for life

Two Florida men could be facing a life sentence in Oklahoma for attempting to transport Colorado-and California-made cannabis, hash, edibles and other concentrated forms of herb worth about $250,000.

According to the Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics, Robert Shepard and Andrew Mason were stopped last week outside of Oklahoma City for following another vehicle too closely. That's a common charge in states neighboring Colorado, where troopers have been profiling certain cars with green-and-white license plates and pulling them over for minor infractions. Narcotics agents say the Florida men were acting nervous during the stop, which prompted agents to call out a drug dog, Xena.

It didn't take long for Xena to alert officers to the fifty pounds of pot products in the car. Although the seized items aren't listed on the police report, cops say they found e-cigarette cartridges containing cannabis oil, waxes and dozens of edibles, including butters and oils. All of them are things you can legally buy, possess and use in medical and recreational marijuana states, at least to some degree.

But in Oklahoma, such items can quickly add up to massive felony charges. Cops say the products sell for as much as five times their original price once they're shipped out of state, which might help explain the $250,000 figure given by the Oklahoma narcotics cops.

Possession of hash and concentrates for personal use in Oklahoma could net someone a year in jail and $1,000 in fines. But those found to be transporting or possessing hash and concentrates with intent to sell face anywhere from two years to life in prison, not to mention up to $20,000 in fines. The same goes for sale or distribution of raw marijuana, and between 25 and 1,000 pounds can actually trigger as much as $100,000 in fines. Any way you slice it, Shepard and Mason could be looking at spending the rest of their lives in jail.

Oklahoma police seemed stunned by the bust, noting that they had never seen some of the products before. They also said they assumed the men planned to sell the candies and oils to children and teenagers -- because apparently adults in Oklahoma don't like candy.

"It shows who these people are marketing this to, because you don't put gummy bears out here and target 55-year-old men with this stuff," Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics spokesman Mark Woodward said at a press conference. "Teenagers are going to love this stuff. They're going to flock to some of these products, because they could literally be eating these in class, in school, on the school bus, in a movie theater, at home, and parents would have no clue."

Oklahoma officers said they'll be sending the samples to the University of Mississippi to test the THC levels.

Speaking as a middle aged pothead, yes... the gummy bears are for us.  One would think that someone in charge of regulating marijuana might be familiar with it's most famous effect.

"Gee, I don't think these sweets could POSSIBLY be for anyone who is not a small child!  These Gummi bears would also have NO appeal to those in an age demographic that is famous for following a band who's symbol was brightly colored bears.   The existence of medicated gummy bears MUST mean that they just want to get all our kids on The Dope"

... Completely boneheaded of the officers in this case to assert these guys were going to sell to kids because they had gum mine bears. What a load of crap! I'm a full grown adult, and I will have you know that those special gummy bears are some of my favorite treats!

I think a life sentence for any marijuana offense is grotesquely disproportionate to the severity of the crime. That said, I'm not sure if the photo shown here is an actual picture of what they were caught with, but if they were caught with that much, then they'd have to have med cards or else it'd be illegal even in Colorado. Adults here can only possess up to 1 oz in bud or some THC equivalent in edibles or extract. I hope OK does the right thing an cuts a deal for these guys. They broke the law, but I doubt spending time in prison is warranted. If OK moves forward with the prosecution, I'd say give them ten years of unsupervised probation with weekly UA's and a moderate suspended sentence.

lol I love how jus to get an extra charge in their, those red neck pigs said "he was gonna sell it to kids", cuz theyre gummy bears lol i'd eat medicated baby foodit was available haha! legalize, control, and tax, seem to be the only way to keep otherwise very peaceful, non-violent, people from having to deal in the seedy black market where they're exposed to all sorts of un savory things including "hey what the hell im here, why not buy some heroin and see why so many ppl love this drug. "Now, had their been a legal way to obtain it from a dispensary, they avoid a possible life ruining decision, in more ways then just other drugs..

I currently live in a non medical state, Florida. they'll throw ur ass in jail down here for a fuckin roach, Florida has some the most draconian laws in the country.. ugh *fingers crossed for the November ballot to legalize medical use in our beautiful state :) ill be their to vote !! in favor of sweet mary jane, obvsly lol

Sucks for them because they should have known better transporting out of state. But them targeting kids/teens with gummies is ridiculous. Grown adults don't eat dessert, have fun, act immature, etc??

That's why we legalized it. What a pathetic thing to be put in prison for life over.

Oklahoma, Texas, Floria can we disown them? Seriously. Pathetic.

Oklahoma has idiotic drug laws-- I think pot should be legal nationwide--but the law is nonetheless the law. These two broke the law, when they should have known better, so they'll have to live with the consequences.

Harsh sentence. I believe it's totally wrong.  However, they are grown men, and had to know the chance they were taking.  I have been saying for years, legalize it, tax it.  I proudly support this grand experiment we are undertaking here in Colorado. Leave it to dumbasses to try and f' it up for us.  Buy and use it legally. As the novelty and newness wears off, it will calm down and prices will level out. I already see price competition at the shops here in Denver. So far, it has gone very well. Lots of money coming in, crime is actually down and there have been very few bad things reported. Yes, a few kids have gotten into their parent's stash-  That's the parent's fault. Keep your drugs, alcohol and guns away from your children. But the streets and highways are not over run with crazed, dangerous potheads. And no one is O. D.'ing on grass. As other states see the tax dollars rolling into the state, and our law enforcement freed up to concentrate on actual crime, other states will be soon to follow. Provided the dumbasses don't F' it up by trying to ":be slick"

You people are showing your hypocrisy feeling sorry for these white boys. They new exactly what the risk was for leaving Colorado with that much weed related products. I guarantee if this store was about to black men your post would be a lot different lol. Call them what they are drug dealers lol. There morons

@lilbitcrzy97  At 37 you are FAR too young for brightly colored bears.  You probably never even followed The Dead.

(LOL  All joking aside, I'm addicted to Gummy ANYTHING, too, lil... and I've never even had the kind with cannabis in 'em)

@WillieStortz  You sir, are the most ignorant person to comment yet. I didn't find 1 thing about them selling OR marketing ANYTHING to children. I work with medical cannabis in a legal state, and TRUST me when I tell you that adults LOVE candy. Congratulations on being the most uninformed moron I've seen post for a while.

@timbawoof  As a Nebraskan (and former Coloradan)... I would like to apologize personally, for all of the assholes that think our state should sue your state, to pay for the costs of OUR prohibition policies.

Women who live alone know it increases our risk of being raped.  Do you post "She knew the risks" when you see a single woman has been raped in her apartment.

If your answer is "yes", please die now.

However, I will give you the benefit of the doubt that you don't.   This means that you know that "knowing the risk" does not equal "Had it coming"

Yes, you ARE condoning the law, because you are blaming the victim for the injustice.
