Readers: Colorado Springs Has Become a Hellhole

colorado.springs.aerial.565x300.jpg
According to the Brookings Institution, Colorado Springs topped the list of ten cities with the greatest growth in poor neighborhoods -- an unhappy distinction to be sure, and one that plenty of our readers equated to the community's fiscal conservatism, among other factors. Here are three examples.

Don Herman wries:

Not surprising. Colorado Springs has no services available for anyone. It's a hellhole.
Clara Madrid writes:
Colorado Springs is feeling the effects of too many Republicans and religious fanatics living there.
Matt Hougen writes:
Is it a coincidence that Colorado Springs was also recently listed as one of the most conservative cities in America?

Colorado Springs is just the first city in Colorado to go the way of New Mexico cities.  The influx of illegal immigrants flooding across the borders.  Legal immigration welcomes the best of the best.  Illegal aliens are the poorest of the poor of Mexico and they're coming because of FREEBIES.   FREE foodstamps,  FREE healthcare, Government housing,  welfare.  Democrats welcome them with open arms.  Obama is the welfare President.  Democrats are socialists that believe government will take care of people cradle to grave.  Well how is that working in Mexico, Cuba, Venezuela?   This land of opportunity has become the land of handouts.

Colorado Springs is a beautiful city with friendly people. The problem with the city is that it's disjointed & sprawling. The "neighborhoods" are not. They are just large areas of tract homes with no small businesses to create identity. Large majority of the business is corporate. Hard jobs, crap money. You get in the car & drive from one shopping center to the next to get what you need. There are cool old school neighborhoods (Old North End, parts of Downtown, Old Colorado City), but the city does nothing to promote/develop them & continues to push unneeded developments East & North that have & continue to decay the inner parts of the city (which is a large area). Academy was poorly planned anyway & now it's just not a place to live near or do business. Also, all the tech that moved in during the 90s has left, but the people that came with it have stayed. In order for the economy & social wellbeing of the city to improve, the residents of the city need to commit to small business & need to look at established cities and build within. Reclaim failed developments & replace with small business, art projects & parks. Realize that the city & region does have a regional identity and embrace it. Make neighborhoods cool & develop unique identities. Colorado Springs has everything one could want & is beautiful, but as a city it's nothing but untapped potential.

Was there a couple weekends ago and was surprised by the number of pan handlers asking for money. I work on Pearl Street Mall in Boulder so I know pan handlers.... the Springs was worse!

Well that would explain all of the recent car theft I have been hearing about.

Colorado Springs is the worse city in Colorado. Way too many evangelical, anti-marijuana meth addicts. Pueblo is a paradise in comparison.

Wow... I can't believe the comments here! The Springs is BEAUTIFUL. I lived there for 18 years, I can tell you that the politics do not control your life and if you don't live near a military base you wouldn't know it has any more military presence than in Denver. People in Denver are on their high horse when in reality they pay higher rent, sit in traffic every day, and have to drive 20+ miles to go hiking. If you call no traffic, lower rent, hiking every day, lower crime rate and A LOWER POVERTY RATE than in Denver as a hellhole than idk what gated community you come from. Yes, look at demographics on Wiki, Colorado Springs' poverty rate is far lower than Denver's so IDK what the fu** Westword is even trying to say anyway.

I hope you all get a chance to visit a 3rd world country or even just turn on the news and learn about what's going on in Gaza, North Korea, or even Ferguson, MO right now and still have the dignity to call the Springs a "hellhole". Despicable first world problems.

It was a beautiful area (still is) but then in the 90's a bunch of idiots (Democrats) moved in and it's gone downhill since.

Statistics 101. If you start with next to zero of something, the smallest of increases will appear dramatic when expressed as percentages of the number you started with. Probably a fair number of cities with small numbers of poor neighborhoods on this list. It would be almost impossible for, say, Detroit to show a dramatic increase in number of poor neighborhoods, since there is so little room for increase in the present high number.

For the past seven years I have said that Colorado Springs is on its way to being Detroit! Every time a go there (about twice a month) it looks more run down! A shame really - I used to live there and loved it, now; not so much!

I love how people say oh they don't have services...believe me, coming from a state that loooooves these "services", they do nothing to help people get out of welfare just makes them dependant. You know why you don't see any California cities on there...our poverty numbers are already to high so its hard to match these smaller cities in percentages.
