Around 2 a.m. this morning, Joshua Hoppe, 32, was arrested in east Denver on suspicion of murder. Last week, Hoppe allegedly killed 55-year-old James Barnes, who witnesses say had been threatening him with a machete. Photos, videos and details below.

At about 8:05 p.m. on August 13, according to the Littleton Police Department, officers were dispatched to 555 West Peakview Avenue on a report of a shooting.

Upon their arrival, they found a man later identified as Barnes in the front yard of the home. He had suffered a gunshot wound to the chest and subsequently died of the wound.

The person who put the bullet in Barnes was seen leaving the area on foot, and his identity didn't remain a mystery for long. Police identified him as Hoppe and promptly issued an arrest warrant for first-degree murder in his name.

What led to this tragedy? Donald and Maria Schenkeir provided the background to CBS4 the day after the shooting. They said Hoppe had dated their daughter for approximately ten years and even lived in the house until last year, at which point they asked him to vacate.

Then, this past May, Barnes, described as a good friend of the woman, moved in -- and there was clearly friction between him and Hoppe. Maria Schenkeir told the station that Hoppe had threatened to kill him.

Hoppe allegedly made good on this promise last week amid a confrontation with Barnes. The Schenkeirs say that as Hoppe approached the home, Barnes stepped outside holding a machete and a chain -- potentially lethal weapons, yet no match for the gun in Hoppe's possession.

After Hoppe fired, Barnes reportedly pointed to his chest and told Maria "I'm shot" before expiring.

The gun was recovered at the scene and the cops soon put out an all-points bulletin for Hoppe, who remained at large until a few hours ago. 7News was on the scene when Hoppe was located by authorities at an apartment complex near Leetsdale Drive and South Quebec Street.

The station notes that Hoppe could make his first court appearance as early as today -- and while it's much too soon to know for certain about his fate, Maria Schenkeir shared a prediction last week. "Josh will probably be in prison for the rest of his life," she said, adding, "It's pure ignorance."

But the NRA told me that it's just as easy to kill someone with a machete as it is to kill them with a gun...

As long as the Gun Culture thrives we will continue to see more of this. The protect yourself by killing someone is totally out of control. Of course Wyatt Earp would love how we have devolved back to the Old West.

Restraining orders? Status of legal residence? A lot of missing details. Maybe the threats should have been reported a little sooner. Either way, you don't bring a knife to a gun fight.

If a Cop shot a man with a machete , he'd be cleared and given a commendation.

If someone threatens me with a machete, I'll use everything up to and including NBC weapons to defend myself. This is silly. This man is guilty of NOTHING.

I think that it could be fair depending on the scenario...shot guns do not fire "bullets"

Meanwhile, in the real world...violent crime is down immensely from 20-30 years ago, the vast majority of legal gun owners commit NO crimes...but yeah, Doug....it's TOTALLY out of control. Funny, you only seem to comment when it's some dipshit white kid, who may or may not have used have used a gun in self-defense. Like the good little lib you are, though, you don't seem to have a lot to say about criminal thugs in the inner-cities who comprise the vast majority of violent crime in this country, or that "culture".

If someone is coming at you with a machete, you're hanging out with the wrong people.  Stay away from conservatives and you'll be safe.

@getup @stanley1 Ah the token race-baiting dipshit. Please tell me, you little bitch, where's paranoia in my post? Reality and facts are a bitch, eh? Mindless little sycophantic fuck.

@stanley1 First of all, you have conservative mental illness, likely the result of the STD commonly called romnesia.  It is characterized by foul temper, lack of memory, confusing lies with truth and truth with lies, pedophilia, Tourette syndrome like symptoms, paranoia so bad it degenerates someone into being a gun freak, and general stupidity so bad it's sufferers have been known to degenerate so badly they vote republican.

Seek treatment, Obamacare covers romnesia.
