Videos: Watch Gamer Kootra Get SWATted in Hoax That Shut Down Schools

"Uh-oh. This isn't good. They're clearing rooms. I think we're getting SWATted."

Those are the words said by Jordan "Kootra" Mathewson, founder of a Littleton-based gaming group called The Creatures, just before police burst into the studio from which he was live-streaming Counter-Strike. Why? A hoax call about an active shooter that wound up with schools throughout the area being locked down. A video of the entire exchange, plus photos, extra clips and details below.

The Creatures is a collective with a slew of popular YouTube channels in which Kootra and his compatriots comment on games as they play them. Here's a clip introducing the crew....

...and here's Kootra's self-penned bio:

Hello there, My name is Jordan, but most of you know me by my Youtube name: Kootra.

I am a Machinima Director as well as a creature gamer who commentates over those games. I started making machinima in call of duty 4 three years ago which eventually led to me utilizing many different engines for various machinima.

After getting contracted with Machinima.com, I met many creatures who to this day I have worked with on building a fanbase and community. I now make mostly Live gameplay commentaries for my Youtube channel, along with a machinima here and there.

I Hope to do it for many years to come. MLG

Yesterday morning, Kootra let his Twitter followers know he was about to start streaming via this video:

But while he was deep into Counter-Strike, he heard noises in an adjacent room and immediately jumped to the SWATting conclusion. Why? Here's some background from Polygon:

SWATting's recent history includes many incidents related to video gaming, such as griefing opponents or streamers, or even the former head of security for Xbox Live. This weekend, hackers tweeted a threat at an American Airlines flight carrying the president of Sony Online Entertainment, and succeeded in diverting it to an airport short of its destination.
The shit got really quickly. Cops who burst into the room can be heard hollering instructions such as "Put your hands up! Get on the fucking ground!" and "Don't you fucking move, you hear me boy?"

kootra.swatted.7news.4.jpg
Another screen capture from 7News.
Kootra wasn't the only person impacted by the raid. Nearby schools were locked down -- this being the town associated with Columbine, after all -- and buildings were evacuated.

kootra.swatted.7news.3.jpg
A 7News shot of people being led away while a SWAT team deploys.
The reason the cops took the situation so seriously is spelled out in this City of Littleton release:
Littleton Police received a 911 call at 11:27 am this morning reporting a shooting and hostages at 1221 W. Mineral Avenue. Littleton Police, Littleton Fire Rescue and law enforcement from multiple agencies responded. There were no victims discovered after the initial search of the building by entry teams. A second search of the building confirmed that there were no victims and no shots fired at the location. Police are questioning several employees of the office building who are cooperating with investigators.

Detectives are investigating this incident as a false report.

kootra.swatted.7news.2.jpg
Another 7News image.
A subsequent City of Littleton salvo added specifics, noting that "the caller claimed to have shot two co-workers, held others hostage, and threatened to shoot them. He stated that if the officers entered, he would shoot them as well."

Fortunately, none of that was true. But the cost of unleashing so many resources, and disrupting so many lives, was heavy. The Littleton rep notes that "if the investigation determines that today's incident was a hoax, those involved will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law."

As for Kootra, he tweeted the following after he'd been released.

Meanwhile, one commentator on The Daily Dot wrote: "This prank is getting out of hand. What bothers me more than anything, though, is the cop hiding the camera once he learned of its existence."

Fortunately, he didn't find it for a while. Here's the Kootra video, followed by a 7News report.

swatting is domestic terrorism through wrongful use of swat teams. It is no joke and will get someone killed. So no, I will not click on any links promoting swatting.

i cant believe this is a thing...with it seemingly getting more common, i wonder what standards could and are being developed to avoid this based on using only a crank call as evidence... would you be more scared of a slower response to an active shooter while they verify facts, or the chance of something like this happening and possibly going horribly wrong?

MentalMidgets

When you want someone roughed up.....Possibly killed......You call a gang of killers....Simple. The jacked up thing is that once the globalists have successfully turned the people against these storm-troopers in blue, they will be abandoned by their masters in order to form a NWO. They aren't going to be let 'into the club'. The powers that be have even more contempt for them than they do for us, but they need them right now to do their dirty work. What a bunch of idiots.

Now that Suicide By Cop has been firmly established and ACCEPTED by a cowardly American society, the predictable Homicide by Cop / SWAT will no doubt receive the same apologetics from obsequious LEO sycophants.

Want to Die? ... call the Cops!

Want to Kill? ... send the Cops!

"Meanwhile, one commentator on The Daily Dot wrote: "This prank is getting out of hand. What bothers me more than anything, though, is the cop hiding the camera once he learned of its existence."

Why does that bother anyone? They are clearing a building after being told that there was an active shooter. They didn't know if there was someone watching on the other end who could have had their finger on a button for a bomb or not. It was a precaution. This whole swatting nonsense is absolutely absurd and needs to stop. It's not a prank- it's retarded.

Is "gaming" a social disease?

Discuss.

Setup. He clearly said he was being swatted and laughed about it. He knew police were coming before they entered room. He laughed. It was all so he could get more viewers and money for his TwitchTv account. If it indeed was a setup and he was involved his whole channel, the name Kroota, The Creatures affiliation and his Twitch account should be completely eliminated so no one profits from this criminal activity. Note: I play several online games and watch Twitch so im not a hater. I just hate when people bring bad press and haters to the gaming community.

not clicking, not watching. promoting swatting is disgusting. People that find anything entertaining in this reckless practice need to check their head. People that find swatting entertaining are yet another reason for mandatory sterilization of the worst parts of humanity.

I've always suspected that gamers were dumb as rocks, with the ethics of apes, and now I'm convinced of it.

@metalmaxx11 Also look at how they treated the guy as a criminal. Everyone is a criminal until proven otherwise. Notice how that bald swat guy stomps his foot down on Kootra's back once he was on the ground. Really? Like the guy is going to just levitate into the air and out the window?

@metalmaxx11 What a pathetic attempt to justify police suppressing videoing their misconduct!

He probably came to that quick conclusion because it's been happening to ALOT of Twitch streamers and YouTubers, If you really watch Twitch as you say, then you would know that. So stop trying to give yourself credibility by claiming that.

hey genius someone threatened him in chat that he was going to swat him. Just like this is happened to other streamers. Get a clue or GTFO

rylansalvador27

....Are you serious? There was no way he could have set this up because 1. This would involve the whole office building that they work in, and in a worst case scenario, they might kick them out of the building

2. @ScrewPain on twitter said that he was the one who caused this whole thing, and there's also evidence showing that he streamed himself trying to swat another of the member's parents

@k.kaprow Right, because one idiot pulls a prank like this suddenly all gamers are on par with apes. I suppose because a 9 year old girl accidentally shot and killed a range instructor the other day all 9 year old girls are dangerous terrorists with an anti-American agenda?

OH and then there's this:

If you don't like gaming, that's fine. I don't like football all that much. There's been football players convicted of domestic abuse, assault, murder, the list goes on. But I don't believe all football players are wife-beaters or murderers. It's reallll simple, pal.

@k.kaprow Some gamers make more money in two years than you do in a lifetime. Not all are dumb as rocks with the ethics of apes. By taking what this one dumbass did by swatting Kootra and applying it to all gamers is a hasty generalization . So don't try to make all of us sound like that. Thank you.

@chekje84 No -- the reactionaries took one look at the headline and the photo, and concluded that Mathewson should be sterilized.

@chekje84 @k.kaprow That's fine. Please point me to the site where gamers are united against "swatting" their online fantasy-enemies, where these gamers believe in the rule of law and don't lower themselves to the level of anarchist "pig"-haters.

@TheBigB @k.kaprow When I start seeing gamers and libertarians condemning the criminal "swatters" and not the cops who are forced to respond to these idiotic and dangerous "pranks," I'll start thinking better of them. But observe the comments to this article at Reason.com, where anarcho-libertarian gamers, to a man, blame the cops and not the "swatters" for these incidents. You want respect? Earn it, and call out your moron libertarian pals for their partisan cop-hate philosophy. Silence is acquiescence.

@RobertChase    "I am not going to watch the video; I might say or do something I would later regret."  Because, like the police, you often lack self control and react emotionally instead of logically?  Just watch the video and consider it an opportunity to practice restraint...

@k.kaprow It's really weird that you have something against gamer's. Then you go and throw political labels into the mix. Strange man.

chekje84

@k.kaprow @chekje84 let's start here, a video game column on Forbes written by a gamer, for gamers. The author is clearly level headed and states, in a number of phrases, that swatting needs to end because it is dangerous:

www.forbes.com/sites/insertcoin/2014/08/28/watch-the-insanity-of-a-counter-strike-player-being-swat-ed-live-on-stream/

Or how about this article, published on kotaku.com, a gaming blog, which condemns the act (note the comments in agreement):

http://kotaku.com/yep-swatting-is-still-the-dumbest-prank-around-1607213846

Or how about this, the Creatures' reddit page where the vast majority of comments (undoubtedly from gamers) recognize the problems caused by swatting, the dangerousness of the situation, and also the overall RESPECT for law enforcement:

http://www.reddit.com/r/TheCreatures/comments/2equuo/so_kootra_just_got_swatted/

I don't know how else to explain this to you. The generalizations you're making are akin to someone saying "oh you're white and you like country music??? YOU MUST BE RACIST"

I totally agree with you that swatting is freaking stupid and dangerous as hell, but please don't lump gamers into the same immature cesspool from which the dumbass who pranked Kootra came from.

@k.kaprow @TheBigB are you really that big of a fucking retard Kaprow? If some jackass never called doing a false report this never would have happened, it is the callers fault and in no way the polices fault, and trust me as a racer I am not a fan of police in the least. I think you are the one that is "dumb as rocks with the ethics of an ape"

TheBigB
TheBigB

@k.kaprow First of all, you are saying only gamers are complaining about the cops and the raid. BOOM more hasty Generalization from our fallacious friend. But if I remember correctly Cops aren't everyone's favorite people right now in the news. They have more of a shoot first ask questions later characteristic. Plus the fact that they turned off the camera doesn't help their case either. People in the US have a right to record police as long as it is not hidden that they are being recorded. Kootra made sure they knew he was being recorded he was only being a smart and good person when telling them how to turn it off. (Hey look, a smart and good gamer). So really it is understandable if people are upset about that. I understand completely this is not the Cops fault at all that some stupid person called a fake swat call. anarcho-libertaians? More like people who just watched their favorite youtuber pulled to the ground and yelled at.

@TheBigB @k.kaprow TEASER:

"Somebody should start swatting the homes of cops."

Funny stuff, libertarians. Why won't Americans take you seriously?

@chekje84 No comments that I could find on the Forbes article, so no gamers there defending or condemning swatting, or stupidly calling cops "pigs." The kotaku link was better. Most of the people there had no sympathy for swatters and seemed to understand the dynamics involved. Not about to wade into the cesspool that is reddit.

The anarchist gamers at Reason.com are giving gamers in general a bad name by blaming the cops -- not the swatters -- for this insanity. Why not go there and straighten them out?

@chekje84 @k.kaprow Thanks for the links. I'll check 'em out a bit later. My focus is on anarcho-libertarian gamers, but I'd like nothing more than to see gamers in general rejecting anarchism and mindless, knee-jerk cop-hate.

@k.kaprow @TheBigB I don't think the "swatters" or your "anarcho-libertarian gamers" are representative of all gamers. Perhaps avoid using terms for a general group of people who are all individuals. Being a gamer does not mean you share the same individual qualities of other so called "gamers."

@k.kaprow @chekje84 I'm a gamer and I am not familiar with any communities (online or in real life) where anarcho-libertarianism is preached and/or practiced. You asked for examples of "gamers" speaking out in unison against this stupid type of prank, so that's what I provided.

idorufalls

@k.kaprow @idorufalls I think everything you're ridiculing is worthy of ridicule, but your posts read like you've just found the glossary section of a first year political science book and are running wild with your new found buzzwords. being obsessed with hating a ridiculous political niche is just as bad as being part of a ridiculous political niche. maybe you should chill out and focus on issues rather than trying to use cool political genre names as often as possible.

k.kaprow
k.kaprow

@jesharps @k.kaprow @TheBigB Great. Can you point me to a gamer site where the denizens decry this criminal "swatting" while at the same time not falling into the "cops are pigs" anarchist parroting? Thanks.

k.kaprow
k.kaprow

@idorufalls @k.kaprow Thanks for the advice, "idorufalls" (if that is indeed your real name) but I've been studying political philosophy longer than you've been alive, probably, and if anarchy isn't an "issue," then you don't know what that word means.

chekje84
chekje84

@k.kaprow @chekje84 I think the author has a decent point: the militarization of police has made swatting more amusing because of the amplitude of force police/swat teams use when responding to these calls. But the author also recognizes the fact that a call reporting shooting and hostage situations does indeed warrant this type of response from authorities.

While I don't think the article is particularly radical, I do recognize there are some comments blindly condemning the actions of the cops. I disagree with these folks. I also think this is an article that caters to a relatively narrow portion of gamers, which is why I do not believe it is representative of the entire gaming community.

But after all, there are radicals in every group and I don't think we can label an entire group based on the small percentage of outliers.
