Reader: NFL Thinks Domestic Violence Isn't as Important as Matt Prater Drinking Two Beers

Matt Prater.
Broncos kicker Matt Prater was suspended for four games after failing a test mandated by the NFL as part of his membership in an alcohol-abuse program he entered after a 2011 DUI; his attorney says he drank a couple of beers at home while on vacation. Our post on the topic riled up many of our readers, including this one, who points out that Prater's punishment is twice the length of the one doled out to Baltimore running back Ray Rice after allegedly beating up his then-girlfriend/now-wife.

avsrawesome writes:

Not to minimize a DUI or having an issue with alcohol, but Ray Rice who beat his gf and was on tape only got 2 games. So I guess domestic violence is less of an offense than beating your gf-now-wife on camera in a hotel elevator. She was knocked unconscious by the way.

. Football causes substantial and reoccurring injuries, which are treated with powerful, addictive opiate pain killers. Marijuana however is considered a banned substance and results in lengthy suspensions. Dog fighting, wife beating and drunk driving considered acceptable. Multiple drug tests positive for marijuana could result in missing an entire season. No progress in football still stuck in the past and conservative.

He wasn't drinking at a bar in public, he was at home during the off-season. He was still wrong, rules are rules....he's not above the law, he let his team, coaches, staff and fans down and his mistake could very well cost them wins. He should be punnished but what he did does not deserve a more severe punishment then domestic violence!

And how 'bout the dog fighter Michael Vick???? I am disgusted that NFL lets him play again. Don't tell me he has paid his debt to society, either. The spiels he gives on animal abuse are not sincere

Domestic violence is much worst than a couple of beers. Shows the value of women in the NFL.

If you support the game, you support their decisions. Don't support the game, their wallets will hurt enough in corporate to make a difference. Until then, I say FUCK them and the supporters of the game. Turn off the fucking TV and play outside with your kids and teach them what it is to be a true person of substance.

What percentage of the NFL population? Compare that to the regular population... These are numbers we should be considering when we call out any group....

I think once they beat their wife or any domestic violence situation they should automatically be banned from playing in the NFL. Never would want my son to look up to him as a role model smh

Was it actually on video? All I saw was him dragging her unconscious body out of the elevator. Who hasn't had to do that in Vegas?

The NFL needs to establish a domestic abuse policy. Everyone agrees that 2 games was too light but you can't compare it to Prater. Prater had to have messed up more than the DUI and 'a couple of beers' to have been facing a year suspension. This is from Deadspin and it explains the rules. "For any number of reasons, it is safe to assume that Prater was in at least Stage Two, possibly Stage Three, of the league's intervention program. He's been in the program since 2011 and, absent "unusual and compelling circumstances," the time in Step One is limited to a maximum of six months. At most, a player can be fined three game checks in Stage One. Suspensions are only available once a player advances to Stage Two with the max being six games. A one-year ban, like the one claimed here, is only available if the player is in Stage Three. One only advances to Stage Three from Stage Two by two positive tests, two instances of non-compliance, or one of each. "

I agree obviously there needs to be something in a contract stating something about domestic violence?

What happened to innocent until proven guilty? I'm not condoning any behavior but you can't punish a guy for something he may not have done.

CRAZY the NFL is punishing the team as much as Prater. And, it's costing him a fortune for 2 beers.

Because it's alcohol vs. pot. People still have a wild hair up their ass if someone smokes pot, but alcohol in any form is fine.

Wasn't aware that players need to be "under contract" to not beat their wife. Contract or no contract it's BS. If they wanna suspend prater 4 games because of his contract so be it. But to only give a guy 2 games for beating the shit out of his wife. With video proof. That's what I smh at.
