Alex Landau in 2009 after being beaten by police.
A Patricia Calhoun post about 2009 Denver police beating victim Alex Landau's story going national in the wake of unrest in Ferguson, Missouri inspired many of our readers to weigh in on issues of police, race and excessive force. The following commenter believes those obsessed with brutality are losing focus on what's most important.

Danni Malone writes:

Let's stop the criminals from killing, raping, beating, lying, stealing, cheating.... Where's justice in that? But police brutality is more important then getting monsters off our streets and away from our kids.

when you trust the police to do the right thing as much as you do a would be mugger there is a real and present danger to citizens that must be addressed. There is a very real them against us mentality and every good cop and citizen should be fighting to end this separation. Accountability and police not being above the law would be a great place to start.

The issue is that many of these people are not criminals. And even if they have committed a crime does not mean they deserve to be beaten.

This is interesting. You say not all cops are bad. I agree BUT I'm a recovering heroin addict. I definitely don't believe I'm bad. "Druggies" are sick people. Even when I did break the law constantly, I don't believe I was bad. I was mentally Ill it's funny that you brag about working for minimum wage, to prove that you have never broken the law (which is an absolute lie). I don't believe anybody is just a naturally bad person. I think people are a product of their environment. For instance, my father died of an overdose when I was 13. Which puts me at a significantly higher risk of using drugs than people who do not have addiction in their families. I think the worst type of people are the ones who are strongly opinionated but also ignorant. So people like yourself. Thank you.

Our entire legal process is designed around the principle that the ends cannot justify the means. If our law enforcement is not tempered and just, then we lose our moral authority to enforce rule of law and justice. Police misconduct is not a numbers game.

Danni, would you feel the same if a cop mistook you or one of your kids for a 'monster'?

The GOOD police report the BAD ones. If there are GOOD police, why are so many BAD police still employed?

You cannot become the monster fighting the monster.

Which druggies? Which criminals? Where is your monster line in the sand? Is it the person who is carrying marijuana in Montana and gets a felony arrest who in Colorado is not a criminal? Is that person a druggie AND a criminal? The woman who steals a loaf of bread to feed her kids because she makes minimum wage? Please, if you have the time, define for us how you come to such concrete evidence. Thank you...

By "monsters" does the author mean "unarmed black teens"?

Landau's human rights, civil rights and constitutional rights look like they were violated. It also sounds like the excuse for the beating, that an officer's gun was reached for, has become an all too common excuse for the beating and shooting dead of American citizens of all stripes by authorities. One has to question if these excuses are truthful or concocted to justify human rights violations against American citizens by some bad apple authorities.

Human rights abuses like what happened to Landau at home here in the USA appear to be on the increase. One wonders if American citizens can't get justice in their own country, if complaints should be filed with groups like Amnesty International or the UN. Most people who are beaten by authorities in our country probably don't report the beatings out of fear of the authorities, what kind of free and fair democracy is this?

The real monster is someone who allows Monsters to be in charge. If you think Police should be above everyone else, you believe in an elite class who don't have to follow the same rules as everyone else. THAT is not freedom for everyone, that is 1960s Russia

So, who's the monster? And are you willing to submit to be being brutalized because somebody else mistakes you for one?

What an idiot. The police ARE the monsters these days and we pay them to do. Uninformed jackasses like this reader is why they feel justified.

Yeah this guys a totally ass hole. police throw a flash bang grenade into a babies crib and then refuse the pay the medical bills because the chief won't admit he was at the wrong house. Shooting dogs who are behind fences in front of their families. Beating a mentally ill man to death his cell while they laugh and crack jokes. Shooting an unarmed man six times because he's black. Yeah if you don't think these men are monsters you're either extremely heartless or you don't read.

It is not a choice between the two - there are regulations that need to be followed. The regulations are that whatever a cop says, obey. At the same time they can only say and do legal things. They must defend themselves, but they can't harm people for personal interests. For a long time Denver police was "9 out of 10 good cops". This needs to change, and a Sheriff should be elected by the people and not nominated.

Police are the ones who take a job that could kill them to protect innocent ppl. Not all cops are bad and monsters are the druggies , criminals

I wonder if he'd feel that way after a swat team scarred his child for life, killed his dog, or shot up his suicidal, unarmed relative when he called them for help.

Allowing the police to be thugs, criminals and bullies is very dangerous for everyone. We live in a country as the enemy

Kandi Kandi

Completely wrong. They are to serve amd protect as we pay them, however they beat and execute all too often. Policies need changed and more training needs to be in place because apparently common sense fails our finest more times than not.

Besides I bet that guy wears a badge. That line of thinking is how they justify it.

Problem is, the police far too often are the monster

Adam Aedro Drotar

Clueless. The police are the monsters now. Watch the video of the woman beat senselessly on the side of the road in CA. biggest drug kingpin in American history was a Detroit cop. Google how many times police have trespassed on private property under the convenient umbrella of probable cause and executed innocent peoples pets. How bout this reader uses the internet for something other than being an idiot on Westword.

"But police brutality is more important then getting monsters off our streets and away from our kids."

But what if it's the police that are the monsters?

Ah yes, the idiocy of either/or thinking. Congratulations, Danni Malone, you're a total fucking moron.

You took the words right out of my mouth. I think if officers were required to wear GoPro cameras at all times like they do in some cities, these crimes by the cops would go down significantly. I also believe that a 2nd party should investigate police crimes--not just the police dept...they're obviously gonna be biased.
