Looking to get away from it all and head out under your own steam? Boulder's Neptune Mountaineering is hosting a series of cool events this week leading up to the Backcountry Film Festival next Thursday: Start with tonight's BYOB (bring your own beacon) practice session at 6 p.m., followed by a "Risk Management In Avalanche Terrain" clinic at 8 p.m., presented by Boulder-based adventure guiding company Alpine World Ascents.

Tomorrow night check out Jim Fulton's presentation on hut touring in the Colorado
backcountry and winter touring gear essentials, and get started on planning your next big adventure.

And, if you can't make tonight's sessions, the Colorado Mountain School will present another beacon practice workshop and avalanche clinic next Wednesday, January 19. Check www.NeptuneMountaineering.com for a full schedule of upcoming events, and be safe out there!

Here's a promo clip for the Backcountry Film Festival, $10, January 20, 8 p.m. at Neptune Mountaineering:
