Treehouse Movies: The local answer to Redbox.

The brick-and-mortar movie rental store is a dying breed, but that doesn't mean you can't rent local. Louisville's John Griffin has started a local kiosk movie business called Treehouse Movies. Right now he's got one kiosk in Denver, at the Sunflower Market at 2880 S. Colorado Blvd., and three in Boulder at convenience stores. He hopes to expand soon, to as many green grocery stores in the area as possible.

Rentals will be $1.29 per night except on Monday, when they'll only be 75 cents.

Right now, Griffin runs the whole thing himself. He switches out the movies, troubleshoots, and, if you call the company at (303) 408-7510, Griffin himself will answer and be more than happy to help with whatever you need.

He is using a company called DVD Now, which provides the kiosks and movie tracking software. Each kiosk has a capacity of around 250 movies, and the selection is similar to Redbox, except he gets movies thirty days sooner from three of the major studios.

When he moved his business into Denver at the Sunflower Market, Griffin was experimenting with a different kiosk. He's had trouble with it, so it's inoperable at the moment, but he'll be replacing it with one similar to those in Boulder on January 21st. For a week, all rentals will only cost 25 cents.

Griffin, a civil engineer by training, currently operates another treehouse business: Treehouse Colorado, where he builds actual, literal treehouses. He started that a couple years ago when the housing market crash brought an end to his plans as a residential developer.

His original plan, when he opened the first Treehouse Movie kiosk in Boulder back in August 2009, was to stick to convenience stores. When it became clear that the demand was in grocery stores instead, he was all too happy to look toward the growing number of "green" and local grocery stores, which are currently kiosk-free.

"I shop in green groceries," he says, "and I really believe that the customers who go to a store like that deserve the opportunity to rent a movie without having to drive somewhere else."
