The 2011 U.S. Alpine National Championships kick off today at Winter Park with the Men's Giant Slalom Nationals, and continue through the weekend with Women's GS tomorrow, Men's and Women's Super G on Saturday, and Men's and Women's Slalom on Sunday.

Look for the likes of three-time World Cup giant slalom champ Ted Ligety and three-time Olympic medalist and 2011 World Cup downhill champ Julia Mancuso on the slopes this week, along with the rest of the top U.S. Ski Team racers and FIS competitors. In less awesome news, Berthoud Pass was closed overnight after an avalanche trapped two vehicles on U.S. Highway 40, so check COtrip.org for road conditions before you go. If you're headed into the backcountry this weekend, be smart about it, because snowpack conditions can get funky in the Spring: After heavy snow in the last few days and warmer temperatures arriving, the Colorado Avalanche Information Center rates the avalanche danger for the next few days "considerable."
