It's Earth Day! Here are five ways to celebrate

While most people ostensibly make their resolutions, to keep or forget, on New Year's Day. But I think it makes more sense to save them for Earth Day and resolve to take doable ecological steps with an infinitely more likely capacity for follow-through. I also think it's something to celebrate simply, in all its many shades and meanings, by enjoying life a little more on this day of action and appreciation. Here are five ways to both honor the earth and, possibly, enlighten yourself in the process.

5: Find a beautiful B-cycle bike and go for a spin. Also, keep in mind that it's also your last chance to buy an annual B-cycle membership for only $49 (after today, the price rises to the regular $65). And a good place to get your discounted ticket to ride is at tonight's Denver B-cycle Anniversary Party at MCA Denver, a general celebration of the urban bikers' lifestyle, tempered by a strong dose of eco-consciousness. The fun starts at 7 p.m.; learn more about B-cycle at the website.

4: Determine to spend your lunch hour at Civic Center Park, Broadway and Colfax, where the City and County of Denver Earth Day Fair will deliver all you need to know about saving the earth, step by step, at the Greek Theater until 2 p.m. this afternoon. Representatives will be on hand to talk about everything from car-share programs to eating local; admission is free. "Education," scholar Daniel Boorstin once said, "is learning what you didn't even know you didn't know." So now you'll know.

3: Attend tonight's affair at Green Spaces Colorado, 1368 26th Street, where you can do your pagan Mother Earth dance to the tune of live music and organic eats from local restaurants. Also an anniversary celebration for Denver's five-year-old ReDirect Guide to local green products and services and the launch of the free Green Routes Green Pass, which allows holders discounts at any of the local green map's network of participating businesses and organizations, and other perks. Admission is $5. Party on!

2: If you're bookish AND earth-friendly, tonight's GEDC Earth Day Celebration hosted by the Golden Earth Day Council, is your go-to destination. Featuring book signings with local eco-authors Dave Cooper and Carol Tombari, Native American flute music by Bear Limvere, solar cooking demos by Patty Roberts and artwork by painter Blair Leisure, this is a completely down-to-earth event that also includes dog adoptions and complimentary wildflower seed packets, while they last.

Festivities continue all day until 10 p.m. at the Barnes & Noble Bookstore/Denver West Village, 14347 West Colfax Avenue, Lakewood; if you're planning to buy a book, get a GEDC sticker to wear so a percentage of your purchase will benefit the group's environmental and protection efforts.

1: Step outside. Feel the wind on your face. Smile. Repeat.
