Organic -- or imposter?

​It seems like it was almost overnight that the label "organic" went from something only Boulder cared about to something even Colorado Springs cared about somewhat. Suddenly organic food and farming is big business, and when big money is at stake, it pays to ask, well, what does this mean? That's the question both asked and answered by What's Organic About Organic, director Shelly Rogers' explanation of the processes that qualify as organic and her case for why more people should be buying and using them; it's a compelling documentary, and tonight, the director will appear in person to hear and answer even more of your questions.

But bringing the director to town is not the only Colorado connection the film offers: In the course of taking a look at the fast-expanding market for organic foods, What's Organic follows the stories of several organic farmers, one of whom happens to be Andy Grant, whose farm north of Fort Collins was the first farm certified organic by the State of Colorado, way back in 1988, before even Boulder cared about it. Seriously, this guy is the real deal.

What's Organic plays tonight at 7 p.m. at the Denver FilmCenter/Colfax; tickets are $12 ($10 for DFS members). It's a little bit more than the Film Society's regular screenings because of the director Q&A, but then again, so does organic food.
