A person would have to be damn pretty self-assured to bill herself as a "goddess" of anything, but when it comes to advice, Amy Alkon is as qualified for the title as anyone. Since starting her career dispensing advice to random strangers on a New York street corner with two other women in a Lucy van Pelt-style booth, Alkon has built a veritable advice empire with her column, Advice Goddess, which is syndicated in over 100 newspapers in North America, including the online edition of this one. And if that's not enough, she's also written a couple of books, the most recent of which she'll be talking about in Colorado Springs (where her column runs in the Independent) this evening.

Though she's primarily known in the column realm for dispensing direction on sex and relationships, the book shifts her focus to common decency: In I See Rude People: One Woman's Battle to Beat Some Manners into an Impolite Society, she makes the case that folks need to get their goddamn heads on right and have a little consideration for once in their fucking lives. And while the advice and book domains don't necessarily share the same subject material, they do share a common source: Namely, Alkon's interest in anthropology and evolutionary psychology, with which she calls for a return to the polite normative behavior of yore with the help of some choice, hilarious anecdotes of infuriating situations.

She'll bring all that (and hopefully a few observations on Focus-town itself) to Colorado Springs this evening at 7 p.m. at Stargazers Theatre and Event Center. Tickets are a mere $10. Just prepare to get told.
