Doing us proud: The Book of Mormon sweeps the Tonys with fourteen nominations

It's been not much more than a month since The Book of Mormon, the sweet and dirty musical send-up of Mormonism from South Park creators and Denver locals Trey Parker and Matt Stone, opened on Broadway to the adulation of everybody -- and now its dominance is official: Yesterday, Book of Mormon got the hat-tip for a whopping fourteen Tony Award nominations. Just to give that number a little context, that's more nominations than anything else this season -- taking nominations in pretty much every category applicable to a musical -- and it falls just one of the fifteen nominations garnered by The Producers, which was the most Tony-nominated thing of all time.

Here are the categories Book of Mormon took nominations in, in rough order from most to least noteworthy:

  • Best Musical
  • Best Book of a Musical
  • Best Original Score
  • Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical (Note: Book of Mormon took two in this category, with leads Josh Gad and Andrew Rennells both nominated)
  • Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical
  • Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Musical
  • Best Direction of a Musical
  • Best Choreography
  • Best Orchestration
  • Best Scenic Design of a Musical
  • Best Costume Design of a Musical
  • Best Lighting Design of a Musical
  • Best Sound Design of a Musical
  • Just to clarify, pretty much the only category Book of Mormon is not nominated in is Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical, and that's because there are no actresses in leading roles in Book of Mormon, so really, it doesn't even count.

Tony Award night is June 12, and conceivably, Book of Mormon has the chance to take home the most Tony Awards of anything in history, although it would have to win in thirteen of its fourteen categories to make that happen. Still, with the way things are going for Parker and Stone on Broadway so far, we wouldn't rule it out.
