Ladies Fancywork Society makes New York Times, called "Graffiti's cozy, feminine side."

The Ladies Fancywork Society, Denver's ragtag gang of street knitters, has made the big time -- as in the Gray Lady. Yesterday, the New York Times published a big story on the trend of yard bombing, a process that the paper said "takes that most matronly craft (knitting) and that most maternal of gestures (wrapping something cold in a warm blanket) and transfers it to the concrete and steel wilds of the urban streetscape." And, as well they should, the knitting ninjas of Denver's LFS, a former Best of Denver winner, get a shout-out.

It's about time yard bombing got the recognition it deserved. The quirky hybrid of graffiti, DIY culture and old-timey craftsmanship has become a wonderful addition to many a city landscape, Denver's among them. Although, we do wish our lovely Ladies got more than a one-line shout-out. After all, they've done a lot more than crochet "tree trunks, park benches and public telephones," as the article puts it. They've slapped leg warmers on the Denver Convention Center's dancing aliens, decorated the Union Station construction site and, in possibly their biggest hijinks of all, enshackled the beloved Big Blue Bear with a giant ball of yard.

But beggars can't be choosers, and it's still a good sign that Denver's yarn bombers are getting national media attention. What's next -- Hollywood? Quick, does anybody know if Angelina Jolie can realistically crochet?
