Today in stoke: Castle Rock 'n' Rollers roller derby league joins WFTDA

The Women's Flat Track Derby Association announced yesterday that it has accepted eight new roller derby leagues from its apprentice league program, including Colorado's Castle Rock 'n' Rollers (catch them in action on June 11 at the Douglas County Fairgrounds, skating against Greeley's Slaughterhouse Derby Girls). For those of you keeping score, that brings the total number of member leagues in the WFTDA to 117, eight of them from Colorado.

"There's definitely a very active roller derby scene in Colorado," says WFTDA spokeswoman Kali Schumitz. "The pace of growth in our sport has been really exciting, particularly in places like Colorado. The West is our biggest region right now."

While the WFTDA itself is headquartered in Austin, Texas, this week's news pretty much cements Colorado's status as the center of the modern-day roller derby universe, a point driven home by the facts that hometown heroes the Rocky Mountain Rollergirls won the Hydra Trophy at the 2010 WFTDA National Championships (swing by the Fillmore on Saturday to see the Rollergirls' big rematch against Olympia, Washington's Oly Rollers; RMRG and Oly are currently ranked #1 and #2 in the 2011 standings) and that the Denver Roller Dolls will be hosting the 2011 WFTDA National Championships this Fall, November 11-13.

The other Colorado-based leagues in the WFTDA West are the Choice City Rebels and FoCo Girls Gone Derby (both from Fort Collins), the Slaughterhouse Derby Girls (Greeley), the Pikes Peak Derby Dames (Colorado Springs) and the Pueblo Derby Devil Dollz (Pueblo). Yet another Colorado league, Salida's Ark Valley High Rollers, is currently participating in the apprentice league program.

Congrats Castle Rock!  Colorado is definitely the epicenter of the modern roller derby revival.  There is a new league in Boulder looking for practice space now too.  And come to think of it, is there really any better place in Colorado for roller derby than Boulder?  Just another reason Colorado kicks @ss!
