Keyboards for PlatteForum: Help sculptor Kevin Curry tap into a new artwork

The PlatteForum formula -- pair a resident artist with a classroom of kids to co-create a body of art for a culminating exhibition -- is currently in the able hands of sculptor and DU adjunct professor Kevin Curry, who often reclaims machinery, signage and the parts of technology to instill new meaning into spent materials. And he'll be passing his methods on to the kids, piece by piece, specifically on a work that requires dozens of dismantled computer keyboards.

"Kevin will be taking them apart and re-creating a piece that utilizes a mosaic of individual keys to form a Mac 'home' key -- only this one will be an 'escape' key," explains Platteforum director Trish Tibodo. "It takes about 3,500 different keys to build it, when you consider all the different colors needed -- the grays, the off-whites and so on."

Curry's overall project at PlatteForum, where he's working with ArtLab students, will also include a public art commission he's creating on Tennyson Street, as well as another piece he's building with help from a grant from the Andy Warhol Foundation -- a "House Cozy." In other words, a quilt that will actually cover an entire house, as part of an exploration around the concept of "home" and what it means. That's pretty cool, but Curry needs your help to get started: PlatteForum is asking the public to donate old keyboards of any type, because, as Tibodo notes, "He really needs a lot of them."

Bring your used keyboards to Platteforum, 1610 Little Raven Street, Suite 135, during business hours (noon to 4 p.m., Tuesdays through Fridays), through July 11, or call 303-893-0791 to coordinate another time. Visit the website for information.
