10 things to do for $10 this weekend, July 15-17, 2011

Categories: Things To Do

After a week of monsoon-like weather, it's finally time to get out and enjoy the daytime shining sun. It seems like it's been years since we've had an evening without rain, but there are so many fine events going on this weekend you'll be more than willing to pull out the rain boots and umbrella to ensure you won't miss a thing. The best part is, its all cheap, which means you'll have more money left over to buy more rain boots and umbrellas. View all our events in the Westword calendar.

Laugh Track Comedy Festival at Oriental Theater (Friday-Saturday, $10-$25)
Depending on how much of the festival you're interested in attending, you can get away with checking out smaller blocks of comedy for just ten bucks. What you'll get for those ten bucks is some of the best comedy Denver has to offer in the form of both short films and standup. It's a damn fine deal if you ask us.

Self and Skin at Downtown Aurora Visual Arts (Friday, free)
DAVA provides an after-school and summer art workshop for children and teenagers to teach them the basics of creating art and to push them into new ideas. This year, the teachers have been working with the students on the subject of identity and tonight marks the reception and opening of the work from the participating artists. It should be a good chance to see some young up-and-comers in the scene.

Fresh City Life: Stag Social Club at Forest Room 5 (Friday, free)
Meeting people is hard work, which is why something like the Stag Social Club exists. Hosted tonight by burlesque star Vivienne VaVoom, the point of the evening is to get people together, get them talking and to have a good time. To facilitate this, Stag will be throwing down some good icebreaker exercises and a magician to drum up some active mingling.

Fancy Tiger 5th Anniversary at Fancy Tiger (Saturday, free)
It's a bit hard to believe it's already been five years since Fancy Tiger first opened on Broadway, but indeed, it has. The craft store has been a trademark spot on Broadway since it originally opened, and to celebrate, they're throwing a big party between both their craft store and their clothing store. Freebies, cupcakes, beverages, champagne toasts and plenty of other awesomeness will keep you busy for the entire day.

Girls Rock Denver 2011 Camper Showcase at the Oriental Theater (Saturday, $5)
There is probably nothing cooler than a girls-only rock and roll summer camp, and to prove that point, Girls Rock Denver is going to debut ten new bands from its campers who participated this summer. Over the course of the week-long camp, the girls have learned how to play instruments, written a song and have been practicing for first on-stage debut. It's going to rock -- we're sure of it.
