After a successful summer program, Girls Rock Denver is kicking things into gear with Rocktober, a month-long series of events to help fund its upcoming 2012 camp and hopefully get the group into a permanent space. This evening, art from local musicians like Sonya Decman and Darci Armstrong and images by live music photographer Michael McGrath will begin showing at Sputnik, 3 S. Broadway, as part of a "silent" auction, where interested parties can make bids using the organization's Facebook page.

Girls Rock Denver Co-Director Katie Rothery says the Facebook option to bid on pieces (or buy immediately for a set price) will hopefully make it easier for people to purchase the work without having to bother the waitstaff, and avoid the additional costs other websites like eBay incur. The show will be running all month at Sputnik, which is open during the day to all ages, so anyone can come and enjoy and bid on the show.

Also tonight, Girls Rock Denver is hosting "Boys Rock For Girls Rock" an all ages show at the Treehouse Youth Arts Collective, 734 Santa Fe Drive, featuring performances by Joshua Novak, Now Forever, The Hunting Party and Spokeshaver. Running on a $5-10 sliding scale door donation, the organization invites people to come and check out bands and learn more about the camp, while getting a break from the First Friday masses.

Further along in the month, Girls Rock Denver teams up with Denver Roller Dolls on October 15th, for the team's only October bout at 1STBANK Center, 11540 Broomfield Lane. For all tickets purchased through Girls Rock Denver via e-mail at girlsrockdenver@gmail.com, 20 percent of those proceeds will go to the camp. This event is also all ages and halloween costumes are encouraged.

The following day, The Mercury Cafe, 2199 California Street, will be hosting a 2 p.m. screening of Girls Rock! The Movie, featuring highlights from the 2011 Girls Rock Denver camp. This event is a suggested donation of $5.

Finally, the organization wraps up its month of fundraising with a $5, all ages 2 p.m. show at the Hi-Dive, 7 South Broadway, on October 29. Local acts Cougarpants and In The Third Edition will be performing, along with Girls Rock Denver camper bands from the last three years. "It is going to be a really great afternoon where volunteers and campers reunite, and get a chance to do a mini-version of what the camp does," says Rothery.

An ice cream social at Sweet Action Ice Cream, 52 Broadway, will follow the daytime show from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Currently, Girls Rock Denver operates in a temporary location -- last year's space was the First Unitarian Church at 1400 Lafayette Street -- for the week-long program. Girls ranging in age from 8 to 18 spend the time forming bands, learning instruments and writing songs that culminate into a grand finale showcase. Rothery says that for the organization to have a permanent space would mean its campers could have a place to come and practice any time, keeping young bands going year-round.
