Travis Parr, the local artist best known for making Icelantic skis into mountain masterpieces, opened a major new solo show, The Landscapes of Perception, at Spacejunk Art Centers last week in Bayonne, France.

The show runs through January 28, capping a French tour which included stops in Bourg-Saint-Maurice, Grenoble, and Lyon; the Bayonne shoe is his first solo show in France.

Here's Spacejunk's spaced-out summary of his work:

"His work on canvas experiences Wonder to become grounded in space and time in order to become part of our reality. It is here, at the crux of science and art that Travis chooses to take action. Inspired by Mother Nature itself, he also takes some of his influences in the work of artists Howard Pyle (father of American illustration) or Andy Goldworthy in order to deliver us his sensibility through colorful painting"

Of course, locals won't need to fly all that way to see his work: Just go to any ski slope in Colorado and look up to see his paintings dangling from the chairlifts. The Icelantic Gallery at Battery 621, 621 Kalamath, also has $325 giclee prints of his work -- not to mention those iconic ski planks -- for sale (great last-minute gifts for ski freaks, if you're in a pinch). The gallery keeps regular hours, an the next big First Friday art show will be on January 6.
