Art of Winter proves there's no business like snow business

Chill! The Snow Show has filled the Colorado Convention Center with a blizzard of activity, and the white stuff is spilling outside the facility into the 2012 Art of Winter, a snow-inspired exhibition featuring Colorado artists and innovators.

At noon today and again next Thursday, the Denver Theatre District will be broadcasting a montage of award-winning, winter-themed films by the Colorado Filmmakers Project on the LED video board at 16th and Champa streets; the screenings will move to the board at 14th and Champa at 6 p.m. tonight (and next Thursday).

But that's just the start of the art. The exhibit comprises four distinct galleries that stretch from Larimer Square to the Colorado Convention Center, featuring original works on repurposed skis and snowboards by Colorado artists, a life-sized cardboard gondola installation, a product display from Colorado ski and snowboard makers, and those videos.

Over twenty artists created works on the recycled skis; they're on display through February 6 at Larimer Square. Row 14, right across from the Colorado Convention Center, has been transformed into the Brand Gallery, displaying designs by snow arist/entrepreneurs. And Sam Mobley's Cardboard Gondola Project hangs right over the Snow Show in the Colorado Convention Center.

And that's not the end of the art. There's also an online auction where you can bid on all the artwork, skis and snowboards that make up the Art of Winter exhibition; proceeds will benefit the Something Independent Snow Sport Entrepreneur Award. Bidding opens here at 8 p.m.

The lack of snow may be a problem for the sports industries, but it makes for great art viewing!
