Colorado Mountain Club brings Mountain Fest to American Mountaineering Center
"This year the Colorado Mountain Club is celebrating its hundredth anniversary, and it's also a big anniversary -- the tenth -- for our annual Mountain Fest outdoor education event," says CMC spokeswoman Rachel Scott. "We have a great program on Saturday and six other big events this year as part of our Centennial Celebration series."
The CMC Mountain Fest 2012 gets under way on Saturday at 1 p.m. at the American Mountaineering Center, 710 10th Street in Golden, with free museum entry all day and a full schedule of free clinics for slacklining, nutrition, injury prevention, wilderness trekking, backpacking, fly-fishing, and more. The climbing wall will be open from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. that day, with La Sportiva climbing shoe demos. And, back by popular demand, CMC will host its second annual Mountain Fest climbing competition beginning at 3:30 p.m.
"The first fifty people through the door will get goodie bags from our sponsors -- including Backpackers Pantry, Planet Bluegrass, La Sportiva, Eddie Bauer First Ascent, Deuter and Polar Bottle -- worth about $70," says Scott. "And we also have a great beer sponsor this year, Boulder's Upslope Brewery, for our happy hour starting at 4:30 p.m."
The Colorado Mountain Club is offering $25 discounts on its annual membership fees tomorrow, and the CMC Expo in the American Mountaineering Center's conference room will feature information about CMC Adventure Travel, CMC Conservation, the CMC Eckart Roder Education Fund, and the CMC High Altitude Mountaineering Committee.
The CMC Expo will also feature a broad range of outdoor education resources, including the Colorado Wilderness Families Group and the Rocky Mountain Over the Hill Gang, as well as Mountain Fest "schools" with an emphasis on alpine scrambling, avalanche safety and survival, backpacking, mountaineering, ski mountaineering and ski touring, telemark skiing, fly fishing, knot tying, photography, lead climbing, wilderness survival and wilderness trekking.
Other upcoming events in CMC's Centennial Celebration series include a membership hike on April 28 in Estes Park, where photographer John Fielder will be taking a hundredth anniversary group photo, the Summer Centennial Festival in Buena Vista on July 21, the Centennial 14er Challenge on September 8, a volunteer appreciation party on October 20, and a holiday soiree on December 8 in Summit County, where members plan to install a CMC time capsule to be opened in the year 2112.
