Wanda Sykes on Rush Limbaugh, snowboarding and spilling state secrets

Wanda Sykes is a writer, actress, voice artist, activist and standup comedienne extraordinaire -- and crazy enough to talk to Westword. Her career is as epic as her personality, and she has no problem saying exactly what's on her mind -- whether it be salty, spicy or sweet.

Since she's coming to Denver this weekend for two performances at the Paramount Theatre -- the best news since her return to Curb Your Enthusiasm -- we took this as an opportunity to ask her Sykes-a-delic opinions on death-by-sniper, homosexual nomenclature, food at the White House and Rush Limbaugh's latest open-mouth gaffe.

Westword: So since you used to work for the National Security Agency, if you reveal any state secrets during a performance, will the sniper that's following you go ahead and off you?

Sykes: (laughs) He probably stopped following me ten years ago. Everything I know is outdated -- you can read it all in books now.

You did an ad campaign in 2008 to help stop homophobic slang. When you hear people say stuff like "That's so gay!" do you still correct them?

People I hang around know not to say that. Would I say something? Yes, I would -- especially if there's a camera on.

What was it like to do the White House Correspondents' Association dinner? Was the food good?

I was so nervous I don't remember what was served. The food was served before the performance, and I was so nervous I couldn't even eat. I couldn't tell you what was on the plate -- a carrot? Yeah -- it was a carrot and something brown. It could've been a shoe.

Political question alert: Do you have an opinion on Rush Limbaugh's latest jackassy stunt over Sandra Fluke and birth control?

Jackass...ya know, you just answered the question in your question. Jackass.

You are giving two performances on March 9 at the Paramount Theatre here in Denver -- do you have any good Colorado jokes?

Sykes: (laughs again) It depends on how I adjust to the altitude. I tried to go snowboarding in Denver. I fell a lot. I fell and hit my head, and I couldn't blink for two hours.

Want more Wanda-funnies? She'll be at the Paramount Theatre for two performances on Friday, March 9, at 8 and 10 p.m.
