Carbondale-based filmmaker Skip Armstrong's short film The Mother premiered online this week, the second of five films in his series Of Souls + Water for Forge Motion Pictures. The Mother, presented online in partnership with NRS Films and New Belgium Brewing, is a meditative profile of 67-year-old kayaker Melody Shapiro and a rumination on the mysteries of life, death and the canyons and waterways of the Utah desert.

"The walls, they swallow you up in their beauty, in their vastness," Shapiro says in the film's voiceover. "There's a comfort in that: It feels like I'm experiencing the universe." The six-minute short had its world premiere last month at the 5Point Film Festival in Carbondale; it's available in full after the jump.

"Working with Melody was really remarkable and this film has become very special for me personally," says Armstrong. "I was able to really focus on the cinematography and profile this super-strong, feminine athlete -- something we don't see nearly enough of in adventure film -- who has a tremendous amount of perspective on the world she inhabits. I really love the way this film came out."

The next installment in the series is The Shapeshifter, a profile of freestyle kayaker Ben Marr; it premieres online on June 25. For more on the Of Souls + Water series and to view the first installment, The Nomad, don't miss our recent Show and Tell interview with Skip Armstrong.
