According to history buffs, this public park was purchased by the City of Denver from the federal government in 1872 for a mere $200. What originally started out as a cemetery for the upper crust residents of a city that General William Larimer had founded just fourteen years before (after stealing the land from the Arapaho people) eventually turned into grazing land for cattle, and a burial ground of the town's criminals.

It is commonly thought that the first person to be buried here was a man by the name of Abraham Kay, whose fatality came in the form of a lung infection -- although legend also has it that a disgruntled Hungarian shot his brother over a gold dispute, and dumped the body on the outer edge of the property.
