Bands on the Bricks returns to the Republic of Boulder for the summer

The republic to the northwest -- you know, Boulder -- is really at its best in the summertime, when the forward-thinking city's groovy vibe moves outdoors where everyone can share it. Summer in Boulder? It's where those now-ubiquitous outdoor film screenings first caught on and music sounds better in Chautauqua's big old barn of an auditorium; it's also where Bands on the Bricks, celebrating its fifteenthth anniversary, gets half the town dancing in the streets, right on the Pearl Street Mall.

That annual tradition returns at 7 p.m. tonight in the 1300 block of Pearl Street with music by Selasee, an Afro-pop outfit with a leaning toward reggae rhythms. The free series will continue on Wednesday nights through August 15. A hoppin' beer garden is another part of the experience, serving Twisted Pine brews this month, Upslope suds in July and beers from Avery Brewing in August.

And BOTB's little sister series, Noon Tunes, also returns this week, with live music at noon Fridays through August 17. No beer there -- these midday shows are all kid-friendly.
