Life, death and the infinite universe collide at Su Teatro's Film Fiesta kickoff

Free public movies seem to be a dime a dozen this summer -- although most of the feature films are those favorite family reruns. But the four-week Film Fiesta series, sponsored by Arts & Venues at Su Teatro in Denver's Art District on Santa Fe, takes a more serious turn by presenting contemporary Spanish-language films.

The series kicks off at 6 p.m. tonight with Nostalgia De La Luz, a somber Chilean film by Patricio Guzman set in the Atacama Desert, a unique locale known for Mars-like soil and terrain not only studied by NASA scientists, but known for its preservative qualities. In Nostalgia, women search the desert for the remains of long-gone relatives "disappeared" by the Pinochet regime -- alongside astronomers looking for secrets of life and the universe.

In keeping with the theme, Denver Museum of Nature and Science astrobiologist David Grinspoon will speak at the screening.

Films continue weekly on Wedesdays; for details and a schedule visit the Film Fiesta website.
