Design Within Denver trunk show kicks off with Vital Industries at MCA Friday
When Sandra Fettingis looked at the shop housed within MCA Denver, she saw potential beyond the traditional confines of a retail space. The buyer for Shop MCA, Fettingis was interested in bringing "secondary programming" to the museum -- an event beyond staple art openings and the consistently challenging Mixed Taste series.
Hand-screened glassware from Design Within Denver's first local trunk show, Vital Industries.
The Design Within Denver series, which has its first edition tomorrow night, was the result. Fettingis has curated a local-centric trunk show showcasing new art, wares and the like that will be featured at the MCA every second and fourth Friday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Fettingis wanted to elevate the marketplace, too, by bringing featured designers into the shop to chat with visitors during the casual event. Denver-based Vital Industries, the first of many companies and individual artists to be featured, will be on hand this Friday to show off some handmade goods that should definitely catch the eye of bicycle enthusiasts.
By working with companies that produce items already sold in Shop MCA, Fettingis thinks the trunk show-model will provide a more in-depth introduction of artisans to the community. The low-key atmosphere will be accentuated by handcrafted cocktails served in-store, too, with the front counter at the entrance of the museum transformed into a bar just for the get-togethers.
For future editions, the curator has tapped jewelry-maker Bussard Design Studio, Becky's Buttons & Things and Miss Guindon. In September, local design studio MATTER will showcase its stationary line made from reclaimed, sweatshop-free materials.
Design Within Denver is free and starts tomorrow, August 10, at 6 p.m. just inside MCA Denver, 1485 Delgany Street. For more information on the series, visit the Museum's website or the trunk show's own Facebook page.
