Breasts of Colorado breaks the mold for a fundraiser like no other

Baring gifts: A Breasts of Colorado body cast gets a wild paint job.
When it comes to artists decorating objects for charity we've probably seen it all by now -- giant cow statues, guitars and violins, skateboard decks, fiberglass cats and even those hideous masks that seemed to start it all. But we've never before seen the likes of Breasts of Colorado, at least not in Denver, and you've got to admire the spunk and savoir faire of the brave models who allowed their chests to be cast for the project, which will raise funds for Sense of Security, a nonprofit that offers financial help for patients undergoing breast cancer treatment.

The models range from cancer survivors and their friends to roller-derby girls and burlesque queens. There's even a man in the group: Englewood Mayor Randy Penn, who explains himself and the casting process in the following video clips.

The decorated body casts will be on display throughout September at the Big Purple Box on Old South Pearl Street, but tonight you'll have chance to meet the models and artists themselves over noshes at a reception from 4 to 8 p.m. The preview is a prelude to the October 3 Breasts of Colorado Gala at Red & Jerry's (tickets are $37 to $40; call 303-789-4473).
