An American teacher brings Dr. King's dream to China in tonight's DocNight presentation
How does the peaceful vision of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. translate in the heart of China? The subject of the documentary Bringing King to China, an American woman teaching in Beijing, decided to find out by jumping the multiple hurdles of interpretation, governmental suppression and fundraising to produce a play, Passages of Martin Luther King, at the National Theatre of China.

Filmmaker/journalist Kevin McKiernan (Good Kurds, Bad Kurds; The Spirit of Crazy Horse) followed her along the way (with help from renowned cinematographer Haskell Wexler) right up through opening night, when he captured the backstage interchange between the Chinese cast and African-American gospel singers from the Martin Luther King, Jr. Research and Education Institute.
McKiernan will appear in person to answer questions at tonight's 7 p.m. DocNight screening at the Denver FilmCenter; for information and tickets, $12 to $15, visit the Denver Film Society online.
