Countdown to Denver Arts Week: Muertos Mart at Pirate Contemporary Art
Pirate gallery's annual Día de los Muertos celebration has been bringing family altars and candlelight processions to downtown and northside streets for close to thirty years. It's one of several Day of the Dead celebrations taking place in Denver this weekend, which will merge Dead events with the very lively Denver Arts Week's Know Your Arts First Friday.

Pirate's party begins at 6 p.m. Friday, November 2, with Aztec dancing and a kids' piñata party. At 8 p.m., a procession will leave the gallery for nearby Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, the neighborhood's religious hub; afterward, the adults will get their chance to whack a grownup piñata. While folks are waiting their turn, there'll be plenty more to do, beginning with a walk through the Pirate exhibit of DOD art and altars, this year juried by Maruca Salazar of the Museo de las Americas.
Shopping will be an option, too, in the Muertos Market, which will bring together jewelry, assemblages, clothing and other DOD- and Frida-themed wares from ten vendors. Also included in the market will be the Mysterious Art Drop Machine, filled with blind artworks by Pirate members that can be purchased for $5 a pop.
