The classic Nutcracker ballet has been turned inside out and stretched backwards and forwards and every which way in an attempt to loosen up the Sugar Plum Fairy and her entourage. In Boulder, aerial dance queen Nancy Smith and her high-flying Frequent Flyers began by replacing the plum princess with the Sugar Rum Fairy, and after that, well, anything goes.

Ratcracker, FFP's irreverent, family-friendly twist on an overworked theme, returns for the season at 7 p.m. tonight at the Dairy Center for the Arts in Boulder, complete with a fourteen-year-old aerial phenom as the Rat Prince and dancers who fly through the air on bungees, trapezes, hanks of fabric and a flying bed.

Shows continue through this weekend and next; tickets are $25 or $20 each when purchasing four or more. For reservations visit the Dairy Center online box office or call 303-444-SEAT.

Families are also invited to a post-show Say Cheese! fundraiser from 4 to 6 p.m. on Saturday, December 8, that offers a chance to swing on a trapeze (with professional tutoring) and an up-close photo opportunity with the Rat Prince himself. Purchase the special family-onstage pass for $17 in advance; the price goes up to $20 on the day of the show. Visit Frequent Flyers online for more information.
