Now that heating bills across the state are going up, it's tempting to stay inside and stay warm while staring at your empty wallet. But that's boring! There's tons to do in Denver that's completely free, so you won't have to feel Scrooge-like with your thermostat. This week, for example, you can see live comedy, experience a solo performance or go to an art opening -- without having to open that wallet. For a full listing of happenings in Denver, visit the Westword calendar, and if you know of other bargain activities in the city, share them in the comments section below.

Solos at the Mercury Cafe (Tuesday)
It's fascinating to watch a solo performance, and see the vision of an individual come to fruition. Tonight the Mercury Cafe is dedicating a free show to performers who are going it alone. Kurt Bauer, Doo Crowder, Steve Gordon, David Mead, Eli Moreland, Mr Nasti and Reed Weimer will all do sets, showcasing the myriad sounds people are capable of creating.

Too Much Fun at the Deer Pile (Wednesday)
Rather than sit and home and watch reruns, find your laughs by going out and watching live comedy without any of those pesky two-drink minimums and high cover prices. Every week, the Fine Gentleman's Club puts on a funny show at Deer Pile that features stand-up sets from local and national comedians and bands, all in the cozy space above City O' City. Catch comedy from Sam Tallent, Nathan Lund, Chris Charpentier and Bobby Crane, and never fall into the Wednesday night TV trap again.
