If holiday presents and apocalypse preparation left you broke, don't worry. Denver is giving back this week, with lots of free events. From an Improv-a-Thon to a tribute to the godfather of soul to a pop-up shop and dance party, here are three of the best ways to celebrate the season while avoiding Christmas carols. For more events, visit the Westword calendar, and share other free events in the comments section below.

James Brown Get Down at Sushi Hai (Wednesday)
Get up offa that thing and dance till you feel better tonight at this tribute to the godfather of soul: James Brown. DJ Cavem Moetavation, DJ Mu$a and DJ Anthony will provide the tunes for this celebration of Motown and the late, great performer. Enjoy a screening of blaxploitation classic Black Caesar, munch on the late-night sushi bar (food and drinks are not free), and leave feeling good.

The Entitled Generation Cordially Presents: The Birth at El Charrito (Wednesday)
The Entitled Generation is, as co-founder John Robison IV explains, "a movement of young people trying to figure it out. We've always been told that we're special -- now we're finding out why." The movement will make its debut tonight with The Birth, a pop-up shop and party complete with wares for sale from vendors like Brennan Gilbert Designs and Mildred & Bernice, as well as music from Anthony Ruptak, Dreamhike and Speakeasy. Dress up in black-and-white attire, shop local goods, and dance off your Xmas roast beast binge.

12 Hour Improv-a-thon at the Bovine Metropolis Theater (Thursday)
From noon to midnight today, instructors and class graduates at the Bovine Metropolis Theater will be performing nonstop improv. Whether you stop in for fifteen minutes or try to stick it out for the full twelve, this will be a great opportunity to check out the wide array of talent at the Bovine as well as see some completely new, off-the-cuff comedy -- all for free, technically. But you're also encouraged to pay what you can, since this is a fundraiser for Bovine School of Improv Scholarship Fund, which helps those who can't afford classes afford to participate in improv.
