This past year has been tough for many people, and we're eager to kiss 2012 goodbye. In hopes that 2013 will turn out to be much luckier for many, we invited some of the town's cultural tastemakers -- entrepreneurs and entertainers we're lucky to have in Denver -- to answer a trio of questions. We excerpted quotes from these Q&A's in the New Year's Guide inserted in the December 13 issue of Westword, but we'll be featuring the complete interviews in a series of posts through the end of the year. Up next: Andrew Novick.

Andrew Novick is known for putting on cool events -- whether it's his Xtreme Pancake Breakfast at the Denver County Fair, PowerPoint presentations with his project GetYourGoing, or events at his Asian pop-culture business Gimme Gimme Pillow Toast. The Warlock Pincher, artist, electrical engineer, collector, and Peeps expert consistently creates creative happenings that keep Denver interesting. We recently spoke with this man of many talents about luck, 2013 and his mystery GetYourGoing performance on New Year's Eve.

Westword: Tell us a time when you got lucky.

I think that I get lucky all the time in the sense that whenever I come across something cool or see something cool or hear about something cool that I wasn't expecting, I feel like that is lucky. So it probably happens to me at least once a day. Like, I was driving home from work last week and I saw a little taco truck in the middle of a parking lot and I was like, oh, I'm kind of hungry, I'm gonna stop. And I had three one-dollar tacos that were amazing. So that was lucky that I saw that. I was lucky that they were there. I was lucky that I stopped. It was something that I wasn't expecting that was awesome. And that happens all the time. I find that those kinds of things, if you just open yourself up to not just going to find what you expect but open to find what you don't expect, then you can get lucky all the time.

What's your resolution for 2013?

Resolutions are tough because you can come up with something, but it never usually comes to fruition. I don't think I have a New Year's resolution. I'm always resolving to do interesting things, or create cool events, or go see something I've never seen before, so those are just resolutions of all time, not just New Year's resolutions.

What are you looking forward to in the next year?

For Gimme Gimme Pillow Toast we're gonna have a booth at the Denver Comicon, which is something new. And hopefully some overseas travel, although I don't have it nailed down yet. We're talking about doing a Japanese horror-themed one-day restaurant. We did a surgery dinner in 2011, we did Thanksgiving on a stick last year, so maybe this spring we'll do a Japanese horror cafe. I'll definitely go to the film fest in Austin, and hopefully more film-fest type events. It's a really fun way of seeing things that you don't know what to expect. I'm doing a couple of art shows, one in March and one in April. Most likely some kind of photography installations.

What are you doing on New Year's Eve?

My PowerPoint project, GetYourGoing.ppt. I'm opening up for Itchy-O Marching Band at 3 Kings, so I'm putting together a quite interesting and unique PowerPoint presentation for that. I never talk about the theme of what I'm gonna present, because I want people to come see what I'm presenting without knowing anything and hope that it's gonna be good. It kinda goes back to my other thing about getting lucky. So I never say what it's gonna be about, but the way that I show it will also be interesting. It's something I've never done before, so I can only give you mysterious clues.
