Month of Photography: Dave Wood's The Art of Roller Derby
Photographer Dave Wood's new show, The Art of Roller Derby, coincides with the city-wide Month of Photography celebration and also kicks off a new monthly artist showcase series at Herman's Hideaway. Wood has been photographing roller derby for the last three years, and will be featuring a selection of his black-and-white images -- made into large prints on aluminum sheets -- when the show opens on Sunday, March 3.

"We're pretty spoiled here in Denver if you love roller derby," Wood says. "The first year I followed the Rocky Mountain Rollergirls was the year they ended up winning the Hydra trophy at the 2010 Women's Flat Track Derby Association championships."

Roller-derby fans can look forward to shots of some of their favorite skaters from several of the local leagues, as well as images of such national stars as Suzie Hotrod, who helped lead New York's Gotham Girls to the 2011 WFTDA championship title when the Denver Roller Dolls hosted the event at the 1STBANK Center.
One of Wood's favorite photos captures the visiting Oly Rollers, from Olympia, Washington, skating a warm-up drill at the Fillmore Auditorium before a bout against the Rocky Mountain Rollergirls' 5280 Fight Club. "They do this paceline drill where all fourteen skaters skate full-speed about a foot apart from each other," he says. "I was able to catch them as they went around the curve, and it's become one of my most popular photos."
The band Sunday Girl will perform at the show's opening reception at 7 p.m. on Sunday, March 3; The Art of Roller Derby will remain on display at Herman's through April 2. For more of Wood's work, visit www.DavewoodPhotography.com.
