10 things to do for $10 in Denver this weekend (8 free!), April 12-14
Warmer weather is back, so it's time to get out of the house and have some fun in Denver this weekend. From Doors Open Denver, which opens up dozens of historic buildings, to art openings and a cat show, there's plenty to do in this town for pennies. Long Lost at Gildar Gallery (Friday, free)
Influenced by nostalgia for a time before Google Maps and iPhone guides, artist Ryan Everson uses found objects like Boy Scout walkie-talkies and memorabilia to create his multimedia pieces of signs that long for a beautiful place to get lost. Wander around Everson's fantastic world at the opening reception for his show tonight at Gildar Gallery.
The Velveteen Rabbit at the Broomfield Auditorium (Friday, $5)
Margery Williams's classic, totally heart-wrenching children's tale, The Velveteen Rabbit, will come to life in musical form at this family-friendly production from the folks at Phamaly Theater Company. Watch, through song, as a stuffed rabbit tries to escape his cloth existence and become real.
Eleni Sikelianos and Bin Ramke reading at the Tattered Cover Colfax (Friday, free)
The month of April is dedicated to the art of the poem, and to celebrate the Tattered Cover is bringing two esteemed University of Denver poets to its Colfax location for a reading tonight. Eleni Sikelianos, director of the DU Creative Writing program, and Bin Ramke, editor of the Denver Quarterly, will read from and sign their new books: The Loving Detail of the Living and the Dead and Aerial, respectively.
Cableland tour at Cableland (Saturday, free)
You can peek inside many of normally off-limits places during Doors Open Denver this weekend. One of the prime spots for voyeurism is definitely Cableland, the bizarre mansion originally owned by cable TV mogul Bill Daniels that now belongs to the city. See the multi-level pool, the internal television system, and more fancy, circa '80s silliness at an expert-guided tour of this landmark.
New Work by Matthew and Dale Novak at the Shoppe (Saturday, free)
Eat delectable Shoppe cupcakes while you browse new art by Matthew and Dale Novak. The photography and visual art is sure to be a wonderful addition to the confectionary store's sweet offerings, and one of the top art openings of the weekend.
