You don't have to be mid-century to love the Denver Modernism Show
In the new millennium, modernism is something of a conundrum. As immediate as it is retro, the mid-century ethos of streamlined design and space-age concerns is enjoying something of a style renaissance. Blame Mad Men if you must, but mid-century is cool again. That explains why Dana Cain's Denver Modernism Show has grown into an annual tradition and a draw for modernism fans from across the nation -- well that, and a lot of smart marketing voodoo.

This year's show brings lots of new programming to the table, along with more than 100 vendors, an art show juried by MCA Denver's Adam Lerner, a tiki lounge manned (womanned?) by Ladies United for the Preservation of Endangered Cocktails, the Motorama Car Show on Sunday and tonight's Miss Modernism pageant, a beauty pageant like no other, for which contestants must prove their love of all things mid-century onstage. Past performances have included torch singing, a robot-themed burlesque strip-tease, cocktail-mixing while hula-hooping and speed prefab furniture-building. Guest judge Mondo Guerra and host Naughty Pierre of Lannie's Clocktower Cabaret will preside.

But the pageant, which starts at 7 p.m., is just some of the fun in store when the Denver Modernism Show begins at 6; the evening also includes art awards with Lerner at 8:30 p.m. and live music.
The show continues from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at the National Western Complex Expo Hall. Friday night admission is $20 and includes show entry throughout the weekend, or pay $8 daily for Saturday or Sunday only (children ages twelve and under admitted free).
