Rebecca Rosen on fulfilling your divine purpose and looking to the dead for guidance

What helped Rebecca Rosen out of her deep depression wasn't Zoloft or visits to a therapist. It was guidance from her dead grandmother. The then-college student prayed for help and started communicating with the beyond, which led her to write her first book and heal herself. Since then, Rosen has made a career out of speaking with those who have passed on, doing private readings (for which her wait list is eight years long) and penning her newest book, Awaken the Spirit Within: 10 Steps to Ignite Your Life and Fulfill Your Divine Purpose. The Denver medium will talk about her new book, lead a guided meditation and offer audience readings at 7 p.m. September 17 at the Soiled Dove, a venue she recently sold out; tickets, $35, are available online. In advance of this event, we spoke with the psychic about fulfilling your divine purpose and looking to the dead for guidance.

Westword: What's the purpose of your talk and readings at the Soiled Dove?

Rebecca Rosen: My new book, Awaken the Spirit Within, just came out and really what I'm doing is primarily audience readings for ninety minutes or so. That's where I demonstrate my mediumship work, and spirit basically uses me as a vessel between this world and the spirit world to communicate messages to the living. With that I also have tons of validation, things that nobody would know, so that people walk away believing this is real. And then more importantly, any guidance. The spirits are there to help us live our best lives, and that's the whole point of my book and my work.

Why do we want to tap into this energy? It's to help us. When we pray and we call in this nonphysical energy to help us, we make better choices and we connect in to this higher guidance through our own intuition. It'll be ninety minutes of demonstrating the mediumship, and then it will be about a half hour or so of a guided meditation and on top of that a talk on the book.

When did you first discover that you had mediumship skills?

When I was twenty years old and I was in college and I was going through a depression, I was praying for help and I didn't know necessarily what I was calling out to, but anything that could help me feel better. My dead grandmother started talking to me and I thought I was going crazy and she brought through messages through my writing. It's a process I didn't know at the time, but I came to find out it's called automatic writing. She had taken her own life when I was ten years old and she told me she didn't want me to suffer from depression and she was here in response to my prayers for help, and that I had to learn to trust my intuition and to love myself from the inside out.

She gave me this whole program to do that, and that's my first book, Spirited. It's a self-help, kind of prescriptive program to help people go within and find their own truth, their own answers. So that's how it started, and then once my grandma was done working with me after doing the work for a good two years and I was back to my happy, healed self, she then said, "You now need to go out and help other people." Well, I had graduated with a degree in advertising and I thought, no way. I'm not coming out and saying I talk to dead people. But the spirits started coming to me. I said, you know what, I'll try it. So I started just testing it out on friends of friends, people I didn't know, and sure enough. I could do it. That was back in 2000, so I've been doing it now professionally for thirteen years.

What is your new book about?

My new book is really about remembering who we are -- and that at the end of the day, we're souls. We're not our human bodies. We're love and light. So who are we, and why are we here? What's our life's purpose? it's ten steps I take readers through to help them wake up, because so many of us are sleepwalking, just going through the motions, and we're unhappy, unfulfilled, and there's a void. So then we start filling that void with external things like a drug of choice, and then we get really lost and depressed. It's about helping people wake up, get back on purpose, remember who they are and why they're here, and how to embody that god/goddess, that divine energy.

How can people wake up?

First and foremost, it's having the awareness that something's off or missing. You have to recognize and admit, because I think so many of us are pretending like everything's fine and we're okay, but having the courage to admit I'm not happy in my job, or I'm not happy in my marriage, or I'm not happy with my body. Once you're aware, then it's taking the steps to do something to make it better, either to heal it or move away from it, to change it, to end it. Meditation, that's my first step. It's all about reflecting. It's all about connecting into your truth by quieting your mind, getting out of your head and getting into your heart. Because our heart is where our feelings are and our feelings don't lie, right? Our feelings are our feelings and it's the truth. But our minds tend to make up stories. So get out of your head, get into your heart, and we can do that through meditation.

Another step is then prayer. When we pray, we're basically asking for help. It's what I did when I was praying to something and my dead grandma came to me. It's opening ourselves up to something greater than ourselves to intervene, to help us, to re-remember who we are and why we're here. The law of free will says spirits cannot interfere or intervene in our lives unless we give them permission, so it's learning to ask, but also who to ask. My book gives all sorts of archangels. For each step there's an archangel and then a level of team spirit, and that's our dead loved ones, spirit guides, angels that are there. There's different levels: relationship issues, job issues, health issues, spiritual issues, life-purpose issues, so it's basically a book for anyone about anything.

What are you working on next?

I do tons of private readings, but I just recently found out when we went through my database that I have a wait list for private readings of around eight years. There is no way I'm gonna get through those. It's gonna take forever. So I am moving more into creating a series of workshops to help people develop their own abilities so that they can start to really do this for themselves. I believe everybody has intuition and everybody has a connection to their spirit guides and angels and dead loved ones. I wanna create these workshops to help empower people to do that to whatever degree they're meant to. I'm gonna create a series of retreats, two-day to five-day-long retreats, and this will all be happening in 2014. I just really want people to know that I'm moving out of just being the medium and into the teacher role to empower people to do it for themselves.
