Again this year, Starz Denver Film Festival artistic director Brit Withey is offering his must-see picks for each day of the fest -- including many flicks that movie lovers might otherwise miss amid the flood of silver-screen goodies.

Today, Withey touts Generation War.

Generation War
Directed by Philipp Kadelbach
4 p.m. Wednesday, November 13
UA Pavilions

Be warned: Those of you who want to see Generation War from start to finish need to block out two days: Part one of this German miniseries plays at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, while part two screens at 4 p.m. Thursday, also at the UA Pavilions. But Withey assures us that those who catch the first section won't be able to resist seeing the story through to the end.

These days, there's no shortage of debate about whether the quality of television is currently higher than what's playing in cinemas. (In fact, a panel discussion on this very topic is part of this year's Starz Denver Film Festival; it takes place at 12:15 p.m. Sunday, November 17, at the SDFF Sie FilmCenter.) From Withey's viewpoint, though, what's most important for the fest is to showcase the best material available -- and Generation War is "so good."

"Generation War."
At 270 minutes in total, "it's long, but the production and the acting is all amazing, and it's a great story," he continues, with the main characters being "five friends in Germany starting in 1940, right before all hell breaks loose in the country. Two of them become Nazis in the infantry, one is a German-Jewish young man and there are two women -- one who goes off and becomes a nurse, and the other is a cabaret singer. And the story follows them over the course of the war, going in all the different directions they go, and shows what happens to them up until Berlin surrenders."

The effect is "heartbreaking and heart-wrenching and brutal," with the added benefit of giving Americans "a look at the war from the German perspective. It's really amazingly well done."
