Arvada will welcome a new Petco at 8031 Wadsworth Boulevard this weekend, and the store will host a series of pet-friendly events April 12 and April 13 to celebrate the grand opening and to promote Petco's "think adoption first" philosophy.

The festivities will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday with the chance to adopt a new member of the family from Rocky Mountain Puppy Rescue; there will be another opportunity to adopt an animal from this group at noon Sunday.

At 2 p.m. on Saturday, there will also be a community-wide hamster race -- and staffers will discuss why hamsters make great pets. The Denver Dumb Friends League and Cats Foothills will also be around all weekend; both organizations urge the adoption of dogs and cats.

Petco has a made a company-wide commitment to the "think adoption first" philosophy, citing estimates that animal shelters house six to eight million homeless cats and dogs. Roughly four million of these animals are euthanized every year.
