Playbill: Three shows to see in Denver this weekend

The Central City Opera brings The Sound of Music to the Ellie in Denver.
In addition to Adam Stone's experimental work at Buntport, a cat circus and square product theatre's multidisciplinary work in Boulder (see below), this weekend yields a unique playwriting festival, a classic musical and a one-night ode to old-time radio. Check out these onstage diversions.

Horse & Cart brings back its five-week Thursday-night playwrights' reality competition, The PlayOffs, with a brand new set of contestants from Colorado and across the nation. Each week, the playwrights riff on a theme with help from a local actor at breakneck speed; audience members vote on their favorites and eliminate losers, Project Runway-style. "These shows will be a blast simply because we have no idea what the writers are going to turn in," says Horse & Cart director Michael Emmitt. "We will literally get their weekly challenge submissions every Tuesday, rehearse on Wednesday and put the show up on Thursday." The last playwright standing walks off the stage with a $500 cash prize and the opportunity to have a work stage by Horse & Cart in the doing year.
