Kayaking + skydiving = WHAT THE F$%&?!?

skyaking.png

I thought I was a badass by kayaking once and considering skydiving -- but it turns out I wasn't thinking big enough. Idaho BASE jumper Miles Daisher took the peanut-butter-and-chocolate route, combining the two tastes into something he calls (of course) "skyaking."

Check out the ridiculous footy after the jump.

Stuff to do: Outdoors Resolutions 2010

Silverton skiing

Traditionally, New Year's resolutions are about self-improvement of some sort. Of course, most people fail miserably at them, making me wonder what the point of the resolutions is. But no matter.

Why not apply the concept of New Year's resolutions to outdoor activities? Most people who have a passion for the outdoors have a mental ticklist of stuff they want to do at some point. For instance, I still want to make another attempt on Denali's Cassin Ridge (I spent fourteen days in a tent waiting out snowstorms the last time), and I know I have to get to Switzerland to try the Matterhorn.

For now, those grandiose trips will have to wait. But here's a list of five things I plan to do close to home that should provide nice fodder for "On the Edge." Look for reports on these activities at some point this year.

Sick video: First recorded ski-BASE jump in Glenwood Canyon

Last Tuesday, freeskier/BASE jumper/announcer Ted Davenport, adventurer-of-all-trades Matt Hecker, software salesman/Base jumper Collin Scott, and photographer/BASE jumper Jacob Fuerst became the first people to be filmed ski-BASE-jumping off of a 460-foot wall in Glenwood Canyon -- see the sick embedded video from ESPN.com above. Davenport, Hecker, and Fuerst actually became the first people ever to accomplish the feat the week before last, but the footage didn't come out (thus the "first recorded" in the headline). So they went and did it again.

Davenport posted a bunch of sweet shots from the day on his website, where he blogs about the jump. Also on Davenport's  site: a jump counter indicating he just has to make just five more jumps in the next nine days to hit his 2009 goal of 150 jumps.
