3 things to do for free in Denver this week, April 22-26

Categories: Events, Free Stuff

Whether you're broke after a weekend of partying or simply a frugal, responsible adult who likes to go out for free, there's plenty in Denver to do this week that won't cost a dime. Choose to learn about green energy at the annual Earth Day celebration, watch a series of free form short films, and/or take in a documentary about political pranksters all without having to worry about opening your pocketbook. Leave links to more free events in our comments section, and read the Westword calendar for a full listing of things to do.

Tonight: Colorado Book Award finalist Seth Brady Tucker reads from "Mormon Boy"

mormon boy.jpg
When I first encountered poet Seth Brady Tucker a few months ago, it was in the course of writing about the Words Beyond Bars Project, a book club for lifers at the Limon state prison. Tucker had visited the group and shared with them how he'd learned to love poetry -- both reading and writing it -- while serving as a paratrooper in the Gulf War. Some of those harrowing poems, about body bags and oil fires and young lives detoured, eventually made it into Tucker's potent collection Mormon Boy.

Actors playing apes in Dark Wood are naked -- and on "Nude Night," the audience can be, too!

Naked audience night at Denver's Dangerous Theatre!
Since apes don't wear clothes, the actors playing apes in Dark Wood, a Dangerous Theatre production that opened February 8, don't wear clothes, either. And on "Nude Night," set for this Friday, February 22, many of the audience members will strip down, too: It's a clothing-optional evening, and those who watch the show buck-naked won't have to shell out any bucks to see it.

Byers's Big Feed: Art! Music! Beer! Roasted bison!

spit roasted bison.jpg
Bison the Byers way.
The tradition of the small-town social is vanishing even faster than Colorado's small towns. All the more reason to head out to the eastern plains this weekend for The Big Feed, a unique blend of art show, county fair, hoedown and foot-stomping celebration of rural culture unfolding at the rodeo grounds in Byers, a mere fifty-minute drive from the metroplex.

Eliot Spitzer and Glenn Beck face off tonight in a real free-for-all

The big presidential debate is tomorrow night, but political fights are breaking out all over town -- on street corners, in bars. And tonight, there should be a doozy at the Fillmore Auditorium, where political heavyweights Glenn Beck and Eliot Spitzer will go head-to-head in a battle of ideas.

The boxing-themed event is hosted by DISH and continues "The War of the Words," an exchange that started in New York on September 13 along with the launch of DISH's enhanced political programming options, including Beck's new network, TheBlaze, and Spitzer's home network, Current TV.

Style Strike bags fashion fans with its first episode

Photos by Natalie Gonzalez
The crew films an interview next to the style board.
Style Strike debuted yesterday in the plaza of the Denver Pavilions. In this home-grown reality show, host Samuel Schimek -- of the I Heart Denver store in the Pavilions -- chooses audience members with old, out-of-style accessories to "strike" and replace with new items that are actually in "style."

Every Wednesday through August 15, the Pavilions will feature a new Style Strike, focusing on different kinds of accessories. Yesterday, three lucky winners took home brand-new, trendy bags -- and I received free movie tickets just for showing up!
