Down River Equipment Company is holding its annual spring boat swap and sales at its world HQ in Wheat Ridge starting Friday and running through Sunday. Head over to Down River at 12100 West 52nd Avenue, unit #101, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday or 10 a.m. to 3 p.m Sunday to trade in your used rubber for something fresher, or else get a new boat or accessory on discount.

Rafting bill sinks in Senate

Sure enough, the bill guaranteeing rafting companies passage on established routes through private property died (at least for now) in the Colorado Senate, the Associated Press reported in the Aspen Times Friday. (See the most recent OTE post on the issue here.) Sparked initially by a fishing resort near Gunnison barring rafters on its private stretch of Class III water of the Taylor River, the Senate pushed for six months of study on the issue, meaning the debate won't be reopened until 2011.

Rafting bill faces uncertain waters ahead

House Bill 1188, the controversial proposal to allow rafting companies to cross through private property on historically established routes, is now in committee of the state Senate. (Read a February OTE post on it here). According to this Summit Daily News story, its chances of making it into law are slim, at least in part due to a small army of lobbyists fighting against the measure.

A rafting bill working its way through the state legislature that would allow for rafters to float through private land -- and even portage on private land in the event of low water -- faces a key test in the House Judiciary Committee today.

A response to a Gunnison County landowner recently blocking an outfitter from a longtime route on the Taylor River, House Bill 10-1188 protects the right of commercial operations to run historically stretches of river on private land. The controversy is pitting private fly-fishing operations against rafters
